Summer Corners

Stealing away with a cup of coffee onto the back patio and settling into my rocking chair to soak in the backyard view…this is one of my Summer Corners.  Everyone else settled inside as I enjoy this niche of my very own where I can pray, dream, process, breathe.

One long red couch in the living room and 2 brothers scrunched at one end with legs entangled as they laugh at each others jokes, and giggle at beautiful nonsense…a memory-making Summer Corner.

A faithful dog that finds his boy reading more often in the unstructured days, curls up beside him to linger an hour away in quiet bliss…a restful Summer Corner for both.

My boys popping up between cantaloupe vines and tomato plants with exclamations of joyful discovery of new growth and blooms in our garden…my cup flows over in this Summer Corner.

Another family game, each time with added players:  friends, family, neighbors.  Each simple game an opportunity to connect for a few moments before branching off.  A family game to invite others in is a traditional Summer Corner for our Home.

Some wildflowers and herb sprigs in a mason jar at the kitchen window reminds me of God’s exquisite detail to design and color in everything before us… one of my silent, personal Summer Corners.

A stack of good reading material on the table just waiting for people to hunker down and enjoy…a favorite Summer Corner to share; an open invitation.

I have so many more…

Solitude, Conversation,  Reflection,  Laughter,  Simplicity,  Love…all varying pieces of Summer Corners. These are different than Winter Solstice or Spring Renewal or even Fall Memoirs. Summer Corners are unique, rare, unassuming opportunities that hold tremendous treasure if you can slow down and pay attention. There is no loud fan-fare, no detailed planning. They are often spontaneous and fresh and base-line simple. You have to look to really see them; there is a heart-connect that takes place, but if you do not pause, they will be lost to you.

If you take some moments to see them, than more and more will crop up all around you.  They are a breath of fresh air that hints of clean-cut grass. They taste like homegrown tomatoes or a slice of cantaloupe.  They sound like the chirping of tree frogs and locust at night.  They feel like the extra hug from a child because you invested in their heart. Claim your Summer Corners; such rich soul-treasures.
